The Amazing Johnston’s Wedding from mike steelman
A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege of photographing Kat & Chris’ wedding at the Monterey Plaza Hotel on Cannery Row. I knew from the first time that we met that we would get along just great. And to find out that Chris is a flying trapeze artist for the circus only made it that much more interesting. I had to shoot their wedding.
I was invited to go “flying” with them several months ago at the circus school and had a blast swinging away on the trapeze. Definitely check out that post here and see this wedding photographer in action! Little did you know that I was so talented. haha!
Anyway, the Johnston’s wedding was beautiful. It had a wonderful balance of elegance and fun with the circus themed details. The couple owned the spotlight, with Kat looking stunning in her Rivini dress and Chris in his black Calvin Klein suit. One of my favorite parts was when Kat chased Chris off of the stage after they said their “I dos” with a ball and chain…to the tune of Benny Hill’s Yakety Sax. (Hence the video excitement above!). Another surprise was when Chris fulfilled his responsibility to get the garter, and it turned out to be a never ending silk that had car keys, cd’s, breath spray and more attached to it! Of course, the garter was at the end. Haha…I love it when a couple bring their personalities into the details and has a blast doing it. Here are a few of the highlight favorites from their day. (It’s so hard to pick just a few!)
The stunning bride…
I always encourage my clients to invest in the images that they’ll have for life, and love it when they agree to the “First Look” where they meet before the ceremony. This provides for an intimate time between the bride and groom and an opportunity for some excellent, emotional shots of just the two of them. Remember, it’s the most special day of your life…wouldn’t you want images that reflect the special moment that you saw the love of your life for the first time in their dress/suit? Here Kat is about ready to present herself to her groom for the first time as his bride, and you can definitely feel the excitement brewing.
My heart is stirring by this time! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love Love.
We then headed over to Asilomar Beach for a little while before the ceremony where we were able to grab some stellar images of the lovely couple doing their thing. Gotta love the change in shoes.
A beautiful site for a beautiful ceremony.
For life…the old ball ‘n chain!
Congratulations again to Kat and Chris!! May God bless you richly.
To get to have such an integral part of someone’s special day is amazing… I really think I have one of the best jobs in the world!
